Winged Ants Compared to Winged TermitesWinged termites and ants are also known as swarmers or reproductives. Most importantly, termites only swarm in spring in Cleveland, Ohio. You are not dealing with termites if it is any other time of year. Secondly, termites are soft-bodied. Once they die, their carcasses do not stay intact for long. So, if you find something suspicious that doesn’t appear fresh, it is probably not termites. Beyond that, account for identification markers. The pictured insect on the left is a termite. The insect on the right is an ant. Ants have bent antennae and a restricted waist on a segmented body. Ants have transparent, uneven-sized wings. In contrast, termites have a broad body and beaded antennae. They are more likely to shed their wings than ants. Parasitic wasps can also be mistaken for ants and termites. If unsure, save the specimen in a Ziploc bag and take pictures.
